SASO activities and certificates The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia requires that all consignments

of products that are covered

by a Saudi Standards, Metro logy, and Quality Organization (SASO) technical regulation,

and that are to be exported to the country should be

issued with a Product Certificate and

that every consignment should be accompanied by a Shipment Certificate. These certificates

signify compliance with the applicable standards and technical regulations.

What is SASO?

The Saudi Standards, Metro logy, and Quality Organization (SASO)  is administrated

by a board of directors headed by the Minister of Commerce and Investment and

membership of sectors interested in standardization in the Kingdom.

The responsibilities of SASO are determined according to the statute of SASO, which

was issued by the Royal Decree No. M / 10 dated 3/3/1392H, and according to the resolutions,

issued by WTO which assigned some tasks to SASO, and those responsibilities mainly focus on:

• designing and approving national standards for goods, products, and services.
• Issuing regulations that ensure the assessment procedures of goods, products, and
• services under approved standards.
• Promoting awareness regarding standards and quality, conducting studies and
• research are also involved with the responsibilities of SASO.

SASO activities:

The Saudi Standards, Quality and Metro logy Organization (SASO) being the sole

standardization body in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is entrusted with all activities

related to standards and measurements which include:

Formulation and approval of national standards for all commodities and

products as well as standards concerned with metrology, calibration,

marking and identification of commodities and products, methods

of sampling, inspection, and testing, in addition to other assignments

resolved by SASO Board of Directors.

Publishing Saudi standards by the most proper means.

Promoting standardization awareness by publicity and other means and

coordinating all activities relating to standards and measurements in the Kingdom.

Participating in Arab, Regional, and International Organizations.

General Directorate of Certification:

The Directorate is concerned with issuing all products’ conformity certificates.

The General Directorate of Certification is divided into four sections

, as follows:

• Quality Mark Department:

It grants license for the use of the Saudi Quality Mark by national and foreign

establishments, in accordance with the requirements of the General Technical

Regulation of the Quality Mark.

• Efficiency Labels’ Department:

It grants the license to use the Energy Efficiency Label for electrical appliances (air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, electric motors, and lighting), electric motors, the Fuel Economy Label for new light vehicles, and the Energy Efficiency Label for tires.

This department also is responsible for registering accredited laboratories

in the electronic program for energy efficiency and consumption.

• Conformity Certificates Department:

This department is responsible for Issuing Conformity Certificates for product models, Conformity Certificates for a specific consignment of goods, and Conformity Certificates for a production batch.

• IECEE Certificates Department:

​​It grants corresponding national Certificates of Conformity, in accordance with the IEC System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (IECEE)​​
